A review of the history and the most significant events

The name of the municipality Kostelany is of an ancient origin. It was derived from the word for people from the church (church = kostel) or from the name of a fortified place (kastel). A local legend says the name comes from a little church that used to stand by the road called Hradská.

The municipality was probably founded as early as 14th century on the land that back then belonged to the royal castle Buchlov. The settlement was first mentioned in writing in 1422 in the bond by the King Zikmund, which lists the municipalities that belonged to the Buchlov Castle. After the Hussite wars, both the borders of the Buchlov estate and its owners changed.

In 1887, during the Czech National Revival, the first Czech Mayor of Kroměříž was elected.

Further development was influenced by the war and the foundation of the republic. The declaration of independence and foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic was celebrated on 29th October 1918 by a parade through the whole municipality and a grand feast in the school.

In 1939, during the Second World War, National Home Defence was established in Kroměříž. This organization had branches in all villages. They collected information on the state, power and movement of the German army in stationed in Kroměříž.

National Home Defence had people working for the protectorate gendarmerie who took great risks to inform about planned arrests. In 1942, the German authorities ordered that church bells should be handed over. Two bells from the tower of the parish church in Zlámanec were lowered. More resistance groups were established. In the early evening of 4th May 1945, during the liberation of the right bank of Kroměříž, the fascists hit the dome of the Château tower with an inflammable shell. It started a fire which was visible form great distance and announced the final victory over fascism.

After the war, there was big migration of the population. Altogether 103 people left Kostelany.

Another significant event happened in 1945, when a memorial plaque was made and the memorial for T. G. Masaryk, originally disclosed in 1938, was renewed. However, full return to this figure of Czech history came only after 1989. After a break that lasted many years, a celebration took place at the statue of T. G. Masaryk. The celebration was concluded by planting a commemorative linden in the upper part of the park.

At the end of the year 1997, a new bell for the municipal cemetery was sanctified. The bell is decorated with the crest and seal of the municipality.

April 1995 brought a very significant event: the Mayor of Kostelany received in the Parliament in Prague the approved crest and flag of the municipality Kostelany.
