Kroměříž
is especially interesting for history enthusiasts. In 1998, its gardens and château were entered on the UNESCO list of world cultural and natural heritage. The town centre was declared an urban preservation area. The most significant sights are:
Archbishop’s Residence – National cultural monument. Originally a fortress, afterwards a gothic castle, renaissance residence and after the thirty-year war a baroque palace. Until 1949 the Château served as the residence for Olomouc archbishops. The interiors are extraordinarily well preserved. The Parliamentary Hall, where the Austrian Constitutional Imperial Assembly met in 1848-49, is regarded one of the most beautiful rococo interiors in the Czech Republic, due to its artistic and architectural value.
The Gardens of Kroměříž
The historical gardens that form a part of the Château complex rank amongst the most significant samples of garden architecture in the Czech Republic and all Europe.
The Podzámecká garden at the chateau has the area of 64 ha large and is one of the largest in the Czech Republic. It is mainly in the English style with lots of water areas and precious trees and bushes, and numerous romantic constructions mainly from the first half of the 19th century – so called Pompeian Colonnade, Fishermen Pavilion, summer houses, fountains, Colloredo’s Colonnade from the end of the 18th century. Another gem of the historical garden architecture in Kroměříž is the Květná garden. It has a rotunda with rich indoor decoration and Foucalt’s pendulum which proves that the Earth is turning around its own axe.
Furthermore, there are two fountains, the Fountain of Lions and of Tritons and a 244m long colonnade decorated with sculptures of antique deities.
In the Kroměříž Château and gardens, various cultural, especially musical, events take place every season. For example, in July, the festival entitled Music in the Kroměříž gardens and Château is worth visiting.
